The Five-Step Review Process
Every Air Purifiers Tested review follows the same five-step process. We document this publicly so you can see exactly how our rankings are produced — and so we hold ourselves accountable.
Category Selection
We choose categories based on what homeowners and renters actually search for and ask about — allergies, pets, wildfire smoke, bedroom noise, large open-plan rooms. We don't write reviews for categories where we can't get genuine hands-on time with the products, and we don't accept brand-suggested topics.
Shortlisting
We identify the top 8–15 candidate air purifiers in each category using:
- Verified buyer reviews from major retailers (minimum 100 reviews per model)
- Manufacturer-published specs: CADR ratings, filter classifications, stated coverage area, and filter replacement costs
- Feedback from owner communities and forums where real people describe long-term use
- Input from our reviewers and any relevant category context (e.g. CARB certification for ionizers)
From this list, we narrow to the final 5–7 models that will go through our full review process.
Everyday Use in Real Homes
We purchase or receive review samples of every unit (always disclosed). Our reviewers run each air purifier in their own homes and living spaces — not in a lab, not on a bench — over days and weeks of ordinary life. That means cooking smoke drifting from the kitchen, morning allergy symptoms, dusty radiators, pet dander from cats curled on sofas, and the kind of air quality swings that happen when you open a window in July.
We pay attention to how a unit behaves at every fan speed, how quickly the room feels noticeably cleaner, how loud it actually is at night, and whether the filter status indicators and app controls hold up to daily use. Where a category calls for it — smoke, mold, VOCs — reviewers use the unit during the real conditions that matter (wildfire season, humid basements, freshly painted rooms).
Comparing Notes & Scoring
After living with each unit, our reviewers compare impressions — where they agreed, where they diverged, and why. We cross-reference those personal observations with owner reviews from across the web and with the manufacturer's own published specs. Scores are settled before rankings are assembled: we don't pick a winner first and then reverse-engineer the score to match.
Editorial Review & Ongoing Updates
Every review is checked by our Lead Reviews Editor before publication. Reviews are then revisited regularly — or sooner if something material changes (a filter is discontinued, a model gets a significant hardware revision, prices shift substantially). We note the last-reviewed date at the top of every article.
Our Scoring Criteria
Each air purifier receives an overall score out of 10, calculated from weighted sub-scores. Weights shift by category — noise matters more for bedroom units; activated carbon depth matters more for smoke and VOC picks — but the five criteria stay consistent across the board.
| Criterion | What We Look At | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Real-World Performance | How noticeably and quickly the unit cleans the air in everyday home conditions | 35% |
| Noise at Night | How liveable the unit is on its lowest setting — and whether the highest setting is tolerable in a room you occupy | 20% |
| Running Costs | Filter replacement frequency and price, energy draw, and total annual cost of ownership | 20% |
| Ease of Living With | Setup, filter access, controls, app reliability, indicator accuracy, and day-to-day friction | 15% |
| Build & Design | Materials, finish, footprint, and whether the unit holds up over months of continuous use | 10% |
Why This Matters
Most "best of" lists you read online are ranked by affiliate commission rates. Brands that pay higher commissions get listed first. We refuse to do that. Air Purifiers Tested's rankings are determined exclusively by our scoring rubric, applied identically to every product — paid or unpaid, popular or niche.
What We Don't Do
To keep our reviews trustworthy, there are several things we explicitly don't do:
- We don't accept payment for placement. No brand can pay to be ranked higher.
- We don't write reviews based on press releases. Every review requires genuine hands-on time with the product in a real home.
- We don't hide negative findings. If a unit underperforms, runs loud, or costs a fortune to maintain, we say so — even if we've praised the brand before.
- We don't rely on a single source. Every score combines our own day-to-day impressions, owner feedback from across the web, and the manufacturer's published specs.
- We don't present manufacturer specs as our own measurements. CADR figures, filter classifications, and coverage area claims are the maker's — we note them for context and judge whether real-world use matches them.
How We Update Reviews
Air purifiers change. Models get revised, filters get discontinued, prices shift, and new ownership sometimes affects quality and support. We revisit every published review on a regular basis, and update immediately when:
- A model is recalled or flagged by regulators
- A filter type or replacement cost changes materially
- A hardware revision alters performance or noise levels
- Pricing shifts by more than 20% from our original assessment
Updated reviews always show the most recent revision date at the top of the article.
